Chilled Coffee Frappé
Serves 2 generously
- a Marlene Samuels creation -
A common mantra of the down and out in bygone eras was, “Buddy, can you spare a dime for a cup of coffee?” Nowadays, we're talking more like $4. So, the rub: what to do when you’re loath to pour that leftover brewed coffee down the drain? Try this chilled drink and enjoy a double benefit – pure indulgence and financial savings!
4 cups once brewed strong coffee
1 cup whole milk (2% but not fat-free)
½ tsp. vanilla extract
4 tsp. sugar (or 4 packets sweetener)
4 ice cubes
Garnish: cocoa, cinnamon, and/or whipped cream
- In a blender, add all ingredients except sugar or sweetener. Cover and pulse on high about 5 times until ice cubes sound like they’re breaking up.
- Add sugar. Turn blender on frappe (or high), blending until mixture is smooth and frothy. Serve in tall chilled glasses.
- Sprinkle with cocoa, cinnamon, and dollop whipped cream.
Variation: Chilled Coffee Frappé can also be a deliciously fun base for a cocktail. Consider pouring the mixture into a cocktail shaker, adding 2 oz. vodka and 1 oz. Kahlua for each cup of coffee. Place in shaker with ice cubes, shaking for approximately 30 seconds. Strain and serve in stemmed glasses with cherry or slice of orange garnish.
